Research: Carol Vernallis

Vernallis studied editing and camerawork and summarised that edits in music video occur more frequently than in film, many stand out as disjuncture and the editing has a rhythmic basis closely connected to the song.

Her points were the following:

  • The usual rules of invisible 'continuity' editing are broken in order to draw attention to what is on screen
  • Edits are really obvious this draws attention to the artist by adding special effects and wipes etc
  • Jumps cuts are often used
  • A master shot (base track) is used to give the video a structure
  • The camera may move in time with the music video

Iggy Azalea - Black Widow ft. Rita Ora

This music video is an example of how slow motion is used in various scenes for example in the shot above, Iggy is walking in slow motion to emphasise her.

This shot shows how they use special effects as the background. Rita Ora is again emphasised as the main thing to be seen at.

Another music video which shows Carol Vernallis theory is Katy Perry's 'This Is How We Do'

This music video is an example of jump cut being used in various parts.

Rizzle Kicks music video 'Lost Generation' is an example of the use of base track in edits for example in this shot it's the dancers and the park.
