Filming and Editing: Feedback overall

Overall the feedback we received from our class peers was a really good outcome and the audience's reaction was exactly what we expected.

They all clearly understood the narrative/story line which means our camera shots and editing do in fact represent and show the story line. We had positive feedback as well as negative feedback but they also helped us by telling us where we could improve and what not. Which as a group we will take on and put it into our final music video before the final music video is due on Friday 5th December 2014

Filming and Editing- Deadline week vlog

As we go in to the last week before the official deadline for our music video, i have opted to bring back the vlogging as i feel that it shows what my group is up to and makes it easier for me to explain what is going on and what still needs to be done. It will also show the productiveness of our group on the most important week of the year. This will be done on a Wednesday and a Friday as i have my media lessons on those days. As for the other days, I will still be posting daily updates on what I'm up to.

Filming and editing- regrets

As I am happy with what we have currently produced in our music video, i cant help but feel regretful for not maximising the quality of our filming/base tracks as well as our organisation.

Looking back at all our footage, I feel as though we could have done a lot more filming; giving us a wider option of shots to use in the video. Instead, we have just about the right amount of shots- which certainly isn't bad but very risky as they could have been filmed wrong.

Reason behind this:

  • Lack of communication between group members
  • Availability to film as stated on production schedule
  • Naive understanding of the required filming shots.

Skills development

Skills development

My editing skills has developed drastically in the last year. I know how many of the features work on final cut and i'm very confident using it.
Last year in AS i had a good understanding on how to use it, I knew the basics such as uploading clips cutting them into order, adding transitions and effects,
Now in A2 I learnt other aspects of final cut such as using slow motion or speeding it up. Changing colour or angle of clip, using markers to help  you edit to the beat. Using music on the clip, changing the volume of the sound to adjust to your clip ect

Editing a music video is different to editing like movie. You use different parts of final cut. Last year we diddnt use as much effects or music as we did an opening to a film. When editing a music video you have to use obvious effects and change the pase of editing often and use multiple close ups/ extreme close ups

Rough cut feedback

In the lesson where we watched everybody rough cut we gained some advice from our peers and teacher on how to improve our film. It came in helpful as we changed a few things afterwards and it gave us an insight into how other people view our music video.

They gave us some strengths and weaknesses some of these being

Strengths.

  • Fade out effect to show the girl was no longer there
  • Strong story line
  • Lip sync was in time
  • locations worked well together

Weaknesses

  • The guitar playing needs to be in sync with the music
  • needs more obvious effects and transitions
  • Panning shot in the pond needed to be more steady.
From hearing these we decided to make a few changes to our video to improve it
we made the pond shot more steady. Added another base track that we could include obvious effects.

Filming and editing- Deadline week

The rough cut feedback from the class and the teacher was quite positive on an overall perspective.
The deadline for our final video is on the 5th of December.

We are currently making the changes that was recommended from the feedback as well as changes we feel are necessary to make an improvement on the video.

Social Media update

Filming and Editing: Rough-cut Feedback

In today's lesson we looked at all the music videos and gave each other feedback on what we liked, what we didn't like and what could be improved and how.

For the feedback we received for our music video and mades some notes in 3 different sections.

1. STRENGTHS
  • The base track in the forest
  • The fade outs that indicate the girl is no longer there
  • The storyline is very strong and it works well
  • Audience reaction was what we expected
  • The locations used worked well together
  • Lip sync was in time
2. WEAKNESSES
  • The guitar playing needs to be in sync with the song. For example, in some shots Hadi begins to play the guitar before/after the guitar playing starts in the audio.
  • In the panning shot of the pond we were told it needed to be smoothed so the shot could be improved
  • Needs transitions and effects
  • In some shots the singing was not in sync by a one base
3.  IMPROVEMENTS BEING MADE
  • Making sure that cuts are being made before the camera moves
  • Leave the ending on the shot of the graveyard where the girl disappears and the boy is left alone
  • Adding the effect of using 'bleach colours' to indicate the past which leads to visual clues for the audience
  • Jump cuts when Hadi is on the hill with the guitar
  • The shot where Hadi is walking inside the graveyard it should be made longer

Filming and Editing: Day 5

In today's lesson we had one member missing but we managed to complete what we had to do. We all finished of the editing that was necessary to make the whole music video look flawless and that the lip sync and markers were all in the correct place.
Once we finished editing our footage we all got laptops and started to complete or catch-up with any blogs we still needed to do.

It was another successful day again.

Filming and Editing: Improvements and changes

I have used PowToon to present how as a group we came up with ideas to replace the old ones in order to complete the missing touches for our music video.

Filming&Editing: day 5

Me and hadi added a base track and changed a few shots we thought didn't fit well, I used an effect that smoothes out some clips

Filing and Editing: Editing Day 4

Today we started to smooth out our footage but this was after we completed the base track that we were missing. It was done in front of a wall near Angel station this was because as a group we decided that Hadi just standing in front of a front wall was not what we wanted. So we decided on going outside to continue with showing our outside location.

The white wall we were going to use at the start but we never.
Our footage is being smoothed, take quite a while.

Ideas for Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Currently i am thinking about using either camtasia or Prezi to answer evaluation question 1.

    Camtasia:

Using Camtasia i will be able to speak over the music video and explaining my answer throughout it and proving which bits match the point that i will be making about conventions in real media products.

    Prezi:

Using prezi will allow me to focus on individual point and go in more depth. I would use screen shots or mini clips to highlight my point.

I will make my final decision closer to the time.

Filming and Editing: How we used Goodwin's theory

In today's lesson we were set a task of analysing our music video and show how we followed Andrew Goodwin's theory. As we decided as a group to do the music video for Lego House when we looked over our music video we found that we had only 1 of the 3 types of relations between songs and videos; illustration, amplification and disjuncture.
The one we followed for our music video is 'Illustration' this is where the music video tells the story of the lyric. Dance is often used to express the feelings/mood but in our case no shots of dance was used.

The reason we decided our music video only followed one of the types of relation was because our music video reflects the lyrics of the song. We first went about using illustration through making a narrative for our music video that goes/connect with the lyrics.

How we connected lyrics and music video:

We came up with a couple who are in love with each other, but unfortunately the girl has passed away and the boy is left all alone. Through out the music video there are different scenes where they are both living their moments together, the boy returning to places where the memories were shared and remembering the girl by going to the graveyard where the girl was buried. In some shots the girl disappears where its revealed that in fact the girl has passed away and i's just the boy remembering everything.

      Examples that show this:

In our music video this shot is used where we recorded a student draw a portrait of the girlfriend and when it came to editing we sped up the pace of the drawing to fit in with a verse of the lyrics. 'Am gonna paint you by number, then colour you in, if things go right we can frame it, and put you on a wall.' Through doing this we are following Goodwin's theory of illustration.

      Reflecting: list of skills

      - different shots types
      - different equipment used for shooting
      - import and export on final cut
      - all angles to film in.
      - editing on final cut
      - setting up equipment

      Planning: original video difference.

In the original video of lego house Ed sheeran has a lookalike that is stalking Ed. he carries out activities that Ed may usually do then finally gets taken off stage by security when acting as Ed at a concert. In the video there are many uses of close ups illustrating the difference between the two characters. Ed sheeran is both singing and participating in the video.

we decided to go with a completely different narrative to the original. our video is about a young couple that share many memories. during the video you then see that the girl is just a distance memory and is infact dead.

we are going to use mostly medium shots to show the memories of the couple.
the original video doesnt have many effects however we tend to use a lo

      Filming and Editing- Problem

As we are yet to film our city location shots due to group members not being available to record. I decided to go without the group; taking a friend with me to record. We went to Oxford street but as we arrived, it began to rain rather heavily and thus not allowing me to film. As we are running out of time, we may have to scrap the idea of filming in the dark and instead just film during one of our media lessons.

Filming and Editing: Editing Day 3

In today's lesson we continued with editing our footage and re-checking everything making sure that the singing is in sync with the track, the markers were in the correct place. We also started trying our different effect like glow and adding red on to the shot.

      Original colour

Adding red on to the shot

Rendering is in the process and take quite some time but it's a must.

      Production- Skills development (planning)

During the AS year, my group came up with an idea of what our short film was going to be about. However, We wasn't sure on how to film, which left us less sure on how to edit. The idea of "filming to edit" hit us.

In light of our much improved knowledge and better preparation, this year has felt a lot easier simply because we have a clear idea on what we want to do with our music video and how we want to edit it.

Editing and Filming: Editing Day 2

In today's lesson we continued with editing our footage but we also managed to add another base track. This included our artist standing in front of a projector with photos flashing through in the background. it worked to our advantage as the shots look like they have an effect which means less complications when it comes to editing.

projector used to show the pictures in the background.

We also as a group decided to continue with editing our footage and making sure all the shots are in sun with the lyrics as well as making sure the shots go together but at the same time vary between shots, locations and mise en scene.

A screen shot of our editing in process.

      Production initial Editing

When we first completed filming I started the editing by putting the base tracks in order, laying out where all clips will go, adding markers so we can edit to the beat ect.
After the initial editing we started to take turns and do some editing each. Therefore Hadi became the main editor after the initial editing. He added the flashbacks and effects. Whilst i put the clips in order and made sure they were being edited to the beat.

      Learning editing techniques

As we are about to begin editing, I watched a few clips on how to make someone disappear. I found that it was very easy to do and how to make it effective. I look forward to editing our music video and implementing the new techniques i have learned.

      Production Rough cut feedback

We recieved feedback for our music video from our class mates and teacher.
We gained positive and negative feedback. This helped us to improve our video from hearing what people liked and disliked.  We took all their comments into consideration and therefore changed some things in our video

For the feedback we received for our music video and mades some notes in 3 different sections.

      1. STRENGTHS
      • The base track in the forest
      • The fade outs that indicate the girl is no longer there
      • The storyline is very strong and it works well
      • Audience reaction was what we expected
      • The locations used worked well together
      • Lip sync was in time
      2. WEAKNESSES
      • The guitar playing needs to be in sync with the song. For example, in some shots Hadi begins to play the guitar before/after the guitar playing starts in the audio.

      • In some shots the singing was not in sync by a one base

Filming and Editing: Editing Day 1

In today's lesson in our group we each individually used our time wisely by completing what ever task we had to. We were able to film with the green screen so we completed one of the last base tracks we still had to do. We did 3 different base tracks in 3 different camera shots.

We also called in a friend so she could do us the favour of drawing Tarjae for us as a time lapse for our music video. we recorded her from over the should so that we wouldn't struggle to making the person who draw it look like Hadi. We recorded her from the beginning of the drawing up until she finished the piece when it comes to editing we will speed up the drawing.

      Production reflection

On the day of filming all base tracks went well but one of the flashbacks and one singular shot of hadi didn't come out how we expected it to.

With the flashback shot there was a young child in the edge of the shot therefor ruining it. There we had to use other footage as we couldnt reshoot due to bad weather.

Also we did a shot of hadis reflection in a pond then in tracking  upwards to his face. When viewing this on the computer we noticed it was quite unsteady and wasnt good enough to incorporate into the video.

Up to this point i feel all our location choices went well. The park I think was good as many people go to or walk  through the park and its seen as a everyday excursion. Also we shot in the graveyard to hint to the audience that his girlfriend is no longer alive and that it was a dedication to her and in memory of her.

Production Notes on evaluation Q 1

Wrote this using my iPhone then uploaded to blogger via there.

      Planning: Synergy into 3 products

One of the main item we wanted was a Guitar as one of the items for synergy. The guitar would be seen in the video and on our media visual digipak. It would be presented either as the image that stands out in the front cover of the album by being the only thing in colour as opposed to the background being black and white. The guitar is a convention of the typical acoustic pop artist.

      Examples:

Daft Punk is sort of an example for example the only thing they have in colour is the mask which is silver and gold.

Chris Brown's album cover is also another example as the only thing in colour is the name of his album 'X' which gives it a great effect and it stands out.

The second way of creating synergy is through the use of the colours black and white. This would be done through the front cover as mentioned before as well as shots in our music video where the effect will be black and white.

Examples of what we intend to do came from influences such as:

      Beyonce

      Wretch 32

      Production Photos of filming sessions

All these pictures where taken on the first day of filming
they where taken in Clissold park Stokenewington, Stokenewington cemetery and my house also in stokewnewinton.

On this day we filmed 4 base tracks and shots to show our storyline, Our basetracks was Hadi sitting on a tree, walking/tracking him. Him singing to his imaginary girlfriend (tarjae) and one on a hill looking into the distance. Also our storyline shots which were flashback shots. Additionally we all took turns to do the filming but i did the majority whilst, Tarjae was generally directing and solonage taking pictures for the blog.

Planning: Choice of locations, costumes, props and settings.

      Production: Skills development

In comparison to the AS year this year was remarkably different.
We was more organised and time efficient. For example are production schedule was much clearer and in more detail than last year. It told us the location, time, who needed to be there and what to bring,

Also the blogging was posted better than last year. What i mean by this is, that it was clearly labelled and you knew what each blog was about. They were done to a better higher standard.

      Planning: Reflection on progress blog

From looking back at the 'Reflection on Progress' blog for planning, my 3 thing that I hoped to improve on were time management, blogging my own blogs outside of the blogging checklist and using even more websites to present my blog in depth and enough detail.

In relation to these 3 aims I think I have began to start blogging my own blogs and I am feeling more confident as to what I can blog and how I can present them in different websites. When it comes to time management I do think I have improved but I know I can improve even further as use my time more wisely.
As of now I think I am currently working at at a mark of 16 out of 20.

      2 more targets for myself:
      • Continue with my own blogs but making sure that they are relevant to the blog and the music video.
      • Find different ways of keeping my blogging entertaining and not just boring with texts and pictures.

      Planning: ThingLink mood board

One of our tasks in lesson was to come up with ideas were we put together our artist fashion style. Using ThingLink I have put together images as well as videos that have influenced me personally on what I want the artist to look like and how it will benefit us and the target audience. By choosing a style that can be easily replicated it means that our fans like our artist even more as he doesn't exactly spend a lot of money to look good. This means that our target audience benefit as they can dress alike.

      Planning: Ed Sheeran's official website

I went on to look in detail at Ed Sheeran's official website and found some interesting things and have presented my finding using SlideShare.

Planning: Analysis of the original video

      Ed Sheeran - Lego House

The original narrative of Lego House:
The video's narrative at first portrays Grint as Sheeran, performing activities such as writing lyrics for the song on paper, lounging in his tour bus, and  taking the stage for a cheering crowd. However, after Grint takes the stage and is immediately tackled by security, it's revealed that Grint is actually stalking Sheeran and is an obsessive fan, and that the events of the video were actually him stalking the real Ed Sheeran with increasing severity and mental instability (writing the song was actually transcribing the lyrics from the album cover, and lounging in the bus was him breaking into it), ending with Sheeran and Grint meeting as Grint is forcibly removed from a music venue and Sheeran comes out of a lift.

Our narrative for our music videos:
It involves a boy and a girl who are in a relationship. They both share special moments together in different locations and this is shown through shots but as the music video develops the audience begin to find out that the girl has actually passed away and it is just the boy remembering his girlfriends and their moments together.

      TEAM 23 DIARY - DAY 1 FILMING

On day one of filming. it was quite a success. - we got 2 base tracks done. - we got to know eachother better as a group - we did single shots.

Planning: Analyse 3 Music Videos that have influenced you

For our final choice of song for our music video, the 3 main music videos that influenced me were the following:

      Passenger - Let Her Go

This first music video that influenced me was Passenger - Let Her Go, this was because we agreed as a group that we wanted to do a slow song which included a guitar. This song is slow and includes the guitar and at the same time it's a simple but effective music video.
The camera work and shots are also useful as they give us ideas of what we should use such as mid shots, close ups and long shots.

Emile Sande Ft. Labrinth - Beneath Your Beautiful

This second music video influenced me as it gave me an idea of using a green screen so that we could roughly have the same look as when the artists is in the back ground. Mise en scene also influenced us as both the artists are wearing simple but trendy clothes which gave us the idea of us going the same way.

      Ed Sheeran - A Team

The last music video that influenced me was Ed Sheeran - A Team and this was due to the fact that in this music video a time lapse is used. It is located in the N1 centre in Angel during the night. This made us decide to include a time lapse in our music video of Picadilly Circus in the night with the lights, cars, buses and public walking doing their every day routine. The edits in the music video aslo influenced us as there are some scenes where the shot is in black and white.

Filming: Pictures from filming on Day 1

As I was in charge of taking pictures with the still camera on the day of filming I have made a GIF of all the pictures I took.

      Filming: Day 1

The first day of our filming we all met up as a group at 10 am near Jamilla's house. We then all headed towards Clissold Park where our filming began, the reason we decided to start with the park was due to the fact that most of the shots and base tracks for our music video is based within the park. We started off by the famous tree that has many thick branches and then moved on to the park area to do the swing shots.

We all contributed in our own way for example, Jamilla did most of the filming, myself and Tarjae helped with the directing, instructions and making sure Hadi sang on time to the original song. I also took upon the task of taking pictures of the different locations through out the day. Hadi was in charge of being the artist as well as recording himself with a flip cam so that we could later on vlog on our blogger.

We later moved on to a graveyard that was a 10 minute walk from the park, the filming took place in the graveyard and a bench that was close, we made sure that filming was permitted. Later on, once completing the filming in the graveyard we made our way to Jamilla's house as she lived close to the park. The filming took place in her room were we shot the couple together sharing their special moments. Extra lighting was needed in this shot as the lighting was not that good, but that was resolved as we booked lighting.

Filming finished at 3pm in the afternoon, we all divided the equipment within our selves and made sure we all gave it in the first day back to college.

Overall, I think we did very well by finishing all the shots we needed in the park, graveyard and in Jamilla's room. We all clearly know what we have left to do and how we are going to complete the outstanding filming needed.

Planning : analyse three music videos thats have influenced you

Labyrinth ft Emile Sande- beneath your beautiful

This video is very different to your usual music videos. From this video we got the idea to use a green screen with images of him and the girls relationship relfected in the background whilst hes singing to the camera. We believe it will have a dramatic effect also its something different and will hint to audience that shes dead. Before the final shots.

      Pixie Lott- All about tonight

The first 15 seconds of this song is what caught our attention. This gave us the idea to do a time lapse in London Piccadilly circus to give some location shots at the beginning to show our audience its a London artist and the music video is based in London because they may not no with the shots we have in the park but they will know from the beginning shots. Additionally it will fade from Piccadilly circus to us tracking him in the park,.

      Olly murs- Dear Darlin

This song gave us the idea to do a few shots in a house, To show he's a normal person just like everybody else, he doesn't have a big fancy house he was just an average guy like everybody else. From this we decided to add a couple shots in a house.. Particularly in a bedroom playing ps3 and at home making something to eat..

Planning ; Analysis of original video

      Ed Sheeran - Lego house

The original video for this song will differ to ours dramatically. In this video a crazy fan is stalking him and tries to impersonate him. He follows him and goes on stage impersonating him, Its a good video as it has many different shot types, many close ups, tracking shots and POV shots. It has the conventions of a typical music video. But by watching the original video it seems like a low budget video because its very basic with locations. Its main base tracks are in a house with many lights, a shot of him walking through a field and sitting on a bench.

Our video will be different because our storyline is different. Its about a boy and girls relationship with a twist. As the girl is dead and this is reveled in the last few shots of the video. During the beginning and middle he is in a park thinking about her when they were together and hes doing the things they use to do together eg. swing on the swings sit on a tree while he sings to her and so on..
He have tried to incorporate abstract shots such as a time lapse and flashbacks of him and the girl.

Filming and editing- New video inspiration

      Sam Smith 'Stay With Me':

In yesterday's vlog, I spoke about how i wanted to use a similar opening to my music video as Sam Smith did in his. Here are the shots that i enjoyed and want to use.

Since its quite a sad song, The slow camera movement showing him in his bed seems fitting.

I really like this shot as it makes the video seem continuous rather than having any jump cuts

Again, effective use of the shot. also the mise en scene is good as the colour black represents the sadness.
The tracking shot of him walking down an empty road is effective also, i would like to use this in my music video.

      Filming- day 2 summary

I decided that the house shots we had were not very good. So i felt that it was important that I re-do the house shots. I looked at Sam Smith's 'stay with me' (link in the previous blog). So with just the Camera, I shot an important house scene which will go on to introduce the song 'Lego house'.

When I finished filming, I then put my clips on to final cut pro and edited it the way I plan to do so in college and felt that I did a really good job. Now we are left with the shots in picadilly circus and the green screen.

      Filming&editing: day2

Members of my group shot a base track using a PowerPoint as a green screen to have an effect.
This worked collectively well. We then went to editing it into our production.
