Planning - Ancillary - Research

These are some of the albums i used to base my ancillary products on
Ed Sheeran - Font
Adele - Colour scheme
Professor Green - The photo

Ancillary - Final production

this is my final ancillary products.

Research ancillary products Three advertisements

This is Ed sheeran I did an analysis of his Digipak, I choose to analyse these posters because they correspond with the digipak. They used the same image that was on the digipak and they used the same colours and font. Its practically the same. They did they because theyre all advertising the same person and same songs. It needs to correspond so when people see the posters they know what its about and that it all goes together.

I chose to analyse this poster because devlin didn't have a concert poster and neither did Delihah.
So solid relate to our artist because they came from nothing and they diddnt have a label backing them they were independet for a while before they got signed. They was in the same position as out artist

Addtionally  they used 2 fonts for the whole poster to keep it mild. used one for the dates and info and one for the main bold tilte of there names

Researching Ancillary product - Analysis of 3 advertisments

I was unable to fing the album advert for Jason Mraz's album 'We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Everything'.

Researching Ancillary product: Analysis of 3 digipaks

I've done some research of other artists who are similar to my artist and using ThingLink I have analysed their front cover, CD and back cover. I've also analysed how synergy has been made and the conventions the albums follow for the genre of my artist which is a variety of; pop/folk/acoustics and soul.

Researching Ancillary product- Previous student work

This digipak got the highest mark in the year group. It looks really professional. I like the fact that this student did not go over the top with the design and the fonts. The CD in particular looks excellent.

I decided to look at this one in close detail as the genre is somewhat similar to mine. It looks quite good, and the design and fonts of it is used well. However, i did not like that he is wearing the same outfit as he did in the music video; making it look like an advertisement for a particular song rather than the album. I would have taken extra consideration on whether to film indoors or outdoors as the picture looks like it was taken directly from the music video.

Audience Feedback - Screening

On Thursday 18th December, all the media students made their way to the 'The Screen' in Angel to look at all the music videos produced. I recorded on my phone when our music video played and the audience reaction as well. As you can tell from the video the audience's reaction was a big 'AWW' at the end which was the exact reaction we were expecting, they all understood the narrative.

Planning Ancillary - dos and donts

i used emaze to illistrate the dos and donts, Powered by emaze

Design activity- photoshop

In today's lesson, we were asked to make a practice CD cover using photoshop. I chose the most difficult picture to edit in order to test my ability. Although it looks incomplete I am happy with the design and the fonts. The short tutorial on how to use photoshop has helped me improve my skills and i now feel a lot more confident with designing my digipak. I didn't do a very good job as i didn't manage to think of a clear idea in the short time given.

Ancillary - analysis of previous work

This is the digipak of a previous student work who did exceptionally well. Each part of the digipak use the same font and pictures of their artist which look very realistic. I like the colour chosen for this digipak as although their isnt much to it, each segment of every digipak stands out.
This student has thought carefully about the codes and conventions of the genre and applied it to his/her digipak. This is shown through the choice of bright colours, her outfit in each of the digipaks and the stylised writing used which is mainly pop related.

Planning - real life ancillary analysis

Alo

The cover of Emeli Sande's album has a colour scheme of black white and grey. Her photo is not of her facing the camera however it is very simplistic and elegant. This is usually what these colours may be associated with. The actual CD is also black using the same font on the album cover. it doesnt have a photo on it either. I like the simplicity of this album cover. Emeli's music (especially the songs on this particular album) are also very clean and neutral. This goes with the genre of her music as she sins soul ful pop which is heart warming and tends to make you zone out (clouds).
Along with the album cover, the tour poster is also black, white and grey. it syngenesis with the album cover as it also used the same font and the cloudy grey theme.

Research- Ancillary products. class discussion

In class, we discussed the importance and functions on digipaks to the music industry. We concluded that they are a way of connecting the artist to their fans. To encourage their fans to purchase the digipak, they often add in a little extra for them such as an extra single or a personal message. This as opposed to their album being illegally downloaded. Usually the true fans would buy the digipak in order to feel closer to the artist.

Photoshop practice - ancillary

Today on photoshop I learnt how to add pictures and change there size/ angle
I learnt how to change font and changed layers
I learnt how to change capacity and add an effect to the picture
I also learnt how to get a CD template
Also learn how to place and image and expand it without making it blury
Also using magic wand which is where we can remove the background we dont want

Anclillary Do's and Don'ts

In todays lesson we researhed previous students work and existing degipaks. From this I have made some do's and don'ts for my work.
Do's

Firstly i noticed that you need to do a lot of research on your genre so you can create a digipak that goes with your artist and audience correctly

Image- Use a clear image. Thats not been streched or blury.  For the front of the digipak make sure the face of the artist in clear

Font- Make sure u use 3 fonts max. Or it looks messy and packed. Additionally don't have and writing over the artist face. Make sure it's clear

Colour- Use maximum 3 colours otherwise it looks to busy. Make sure your colour scheem works together. Use the same fonts and colours for your advertising aswell.

Information-    Make sure the bar code, cd number, record label information/logos, copyright information, website and aritst are included on the digipak

Don'ts
Layout- Use a complicated layout that makes it difficult to read text.

Font- Use more than 3 fonts or a font that doesnt relate to your genre or artist

Image- Use images that doesn't relate to your genre or artise

Analysis of three digipaks and three advertisements

Devlin is an English rapper from Dagenham, East London. This is represented in his album cover. The brick wall shows urban street life and the colours have been destorted to sepia effect to show a kind of slum life.

The title is bold and clearly highlights the name of the artist. However the righting beneath isn't clear as i cant read it.

This is inside the album, its very similar to the front cover it just has additional information witch is usual for an inside cover.
It informs us who its featuring and that its his debut album

Throughout the album they have included three fonts

One or the title, subheading then the additional information.

Devlin relates to our genre and audience as he isn't fake or tries to be somebody he's not he dresses in normal clothes and the picture could have been taken anywhere not in a professional studio. Devlin reminds me of our artist as he tries to show his supports hes not so different from them talking about real life.

The track list is the same font as the subheading.

However its not very clear to read.

Delilah is a very basic front cover
the Aritst name is clear and is the only righting that bold and clear.

The image represents her and her normal self
shows off her tattoos and who she really is shes not trying to hide anything about her, Shes trying to prove to her audience that she can do what she wants and shes nor different to them. She doesn't try to hide her tattoos to pretend to be somebody shes not she shows them off. This reminds me on our artist because he's also like this he doesn't like being somebody he's not.

The promotion poster has a clear link to the album cover
same image and font used. Same colour scheeme

Ed sheeran,

The main obvious colour is orange. The righting however is white or black and the main images are extreme close ups of his face..
This is to let the audience know who he is and to get him known. The image at the top has a message of hi on it.. This is him trying to get a relationship with his fans. Ed sheeran likes to be different and stand out. thats why he used these bold colours and funny images

Research ancillary products Class discussion

In class we discussed the importance and fuction of digipaks to the music industry.
We talked about how it advertised the artist more and gives the fans/ supports a type of connection to the artist. As a digipak may include extra things such as another song just for digipak holders. Or it may include a person message of some sort. However it brings the artist closer to there fans,

Researching Ancillary products: Previous student work

In today's lesson we were introduced about the creation of our 'Ancillary Product'. Individually we will have to create a digipak as well as advertisement for the music video which we created.
To help us get started we were shown some examples of previous student's work which all got very high marks. I looked particularly at 3 different student's work because they caught my eye out of the other examples.

This digipak got 10/10 and the advertisement got 9/10. I particularly liked this one as it's not over done and everything works well together. Both the colour and the font make each other stand out and the panels are thought about carefully and they are different but go with the conventions of the genre.
This example got 10/10 for the digipak and 8/10 for the advertisement. I also liked this one as synergy is carried from the music video to the album cover with the background being in the park. The effects and the fonts work well together and stand out as well as going with the image of the artist and there is a variety of things on the panels.
We didn't get the marks for this one but I still looked at it as I might get some ideas to influence my choices when it comes to creating my ancillary product. It includes some of the synergy from my own music video. However, I dislike the fact that the background image looks as if it was taken directly from the music video making it look less professional.

Evaluation question 4 notes

I made a prezi presentation. If link doesnt work please see below.

Evaluation question 3 notes

To do this I used an app on my phone called ABC Notes. Its a free apps that allows you to right down notes and have them all safe in one area. I thought it was practical to use it for this task because itll be there when I come around to writing the evaluation question. 7

I understand the picture isnt clear but i will copy n paste exactly what it says beneath here. Both pictures say the same thing. The top picture it when its completed and on the homepage of abc notes, and the second was when i was in the process of writing it.

Evaluation question 3 (ideas and notes)

  • How other people see our video and how they feel about it
  • What they liked and disliked
  • how we could improve it
The feedback they gave us was useful and we went ahead to change some things to further improve our video. Additionally our teacher gave us some professional feedback. She said we needed more obvious effects and a smooth ending. We then went onto create another base track so we could put plenty effects onto it. We also did research into other music videos with story lines and most of them had a cliffhanger so we then decided to make it obvious at the end to what happened but diddnt want to give it away to much. So we ended it in a way which will make the audience think. As when you do that they tend to remember it and will speak about it with there friends giving us free advertisement

Reflection on progress 3

My blogging has improved gradually throughout the course of the music video. I started off quite slowly and ended up blogging very consistently. My last reflection on progress, i set my self a few targets:

Two More Things To Improve:

  • use more technology
  • do more individual blogs
I have met these targets successfully and with quantity. I do a lot more individual posts and using technology to so. My last blogging health check established that i have been doing very well recently. As a result, I feel i have been very successful with detail in my research, planning and production blogs in the build up to my music video.

Overall, i have done roughly 55 individual blogging posts; using a wide range of technology to do so.

Audience feedback- best parts of the music video.

They loved the emotion shown on this shot, also a clue to the plot twist
They loved how the girl disappears as it reveals the nature of the music video. "very sad"

This shot captures the moment as it's the first that reveal that the girl is dead

We had a lot of problems with this shot but when we fixed with smooth cam, the audience enjoyed it.

Filming and Editing: Progress review blog

In terms of all my blogging I have completed through the research, planning and construction stages of the music video, I think overall I have done much better compared to last year.
I have tried my best to use a wide range of websites as well as apps to present my ideas in a interesting way some of the websites I have used are below in a collage I created.
With my individual blogging I am very pleased with my self as I have a total of roughly 50 blogs with many more to still come. I have written in depth and tried to cover all the areas of information that each blog requires giving in detailed answers rather than being vague.

Filming and Editing: Filming journey

I have used Kizoa to show the main important pictures of the whole filming journey as well as including captions explaining what's happening in some of the photos.

Notes for evaluation Q4

I've started to have a think about how I will answer evaluation Q4.

'How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?'

To answer this question, i will use powtoon to present my ideas. I feel that technology was the best in terms of presentation as it stands out from the rest with its visual and musical elements.

Filming and Editing- deadline week, Thursday- what needs to be improved

As we are going into our last day, We are trying to make sure that we have our music video edited to perfection. We want it to be the best it can be. To do this:

  • Decide whether or not to keep the pond shot- get audience feedback
  • change the colour of the past shots slightly to make it look more effective
  • make sure that the lip syncing is perfect!

Notes for evaluation Q3

I have began to think about how I am going to answer evaluation Q3.

'What have you learned from your audience feedback?'

To begin with I going to get some feedback from my target audience about our rough cut; asking them what they enjoyed about it and what they didn't enjoy. I thought it would be a good idea to gather this feedback along with all the other feedback I have got during my research, planning and production procedure and make a video using final cut pro. I think I would be able to make this very effective and be able to clearly show what I have learned.

Evaluation question 4 - 'How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?'

I used 'Evernote' to present my ideas, the link is below.

Filming and Editing: Deadline week Wednesday

We decided to come into lunchtime media workshop to go over the last bits of our music video.
As we had trouble with this shot, we thought about deleting it. but since we added the smooth cam effect and slowed down the shot, it looks much better and useable.
During yesterday's session, we put a space between this shot and the one before; but today we decided against it and put them together and made it look more continues.

Production- skill development (editing)

Filming and Editing: Skills development

Through out the whole editing process I can say that I have learnt new editing skills. Through the whole process of editing we had to start from scratch by filming our footage and then going on to edit it. I have learnt how to precisely make sure that the lip sync is in sync with the audio track and that it looks good. Furthermore,  I also learnt how to add more than just basic editing such as adding in slow motion, desaturate and also adding in a time lapse to our music video.
In the beginning of the editing we had to add in all the base tracks and then add in markers to every 4 beats this took precision as they all had to be in time with the previous one so that when we cut all of the lips is would be easier.

Filming and Editing- Deadline week Tuesday

Today, we decided to go to the media workshop to further improve our music video. We continued to solve the issues raised in our feedback.
We focussed mainly on adding effects on the past shots which will give our audience a visual clue.

1st effect attempted, we didn't like it because it was to colourful and did not represent what we wanted.

Eventually, we decided to change the brightness and contrast of the shot and thus making it look slightly different to the other shots.

We also didn't like the jump cut in this shot so we decided to add a short clip in between the two.
